Using Authorize.Net Payment Processing

Since 1996, Authorize.Net has been a leading provider of Internet Protocol (IP) based payment gateway services, enabling merchants to authorize, settle and manage credit card and electronic check transactions from a Web site, retail store, mail order/telephone order (MOTO) call center or mobile device. An Authorize.Net payment gateway account enables you to accept credit card payments from your e-store.

A payment gateway is the Web based processor of the transaction between you and your customer. In addition to a gateway like Authorize.net, you will need a merchant account in which to deposit the funds from the transaction. This can usually be provided by your local bank. Check with your bank to make sure they support a connection with Authorize.Net.

As a rule of thumb, if your e-store is generating more than $1,000 per month in sales, using a payment gateway with a merchant account should the most economical choice. If you plan to sell less than $1,000 per month, please refer to the other options like PayPal or manual processing.

Using Manual Payment Processing

Already have a merchant account

If you have a merchant account for your bricks and mortar business, manual processing can work for you as well. With your e-store, you can take orders and periodically enter your sales into your point-of-sale terminal. Using this method will save you from having to signup for additional services.

Adjustable payment terms & payment periods

Even though most internet transactions are handled with a credit card, not all businesses work in this manner. For example, if you have repeat customers who are given Net 30 terms, they can place orders online and you can bill them later. You are able to offer your customers the convenience of placing Web orders without having to change your way of doing business.

Note about manual payment processing

One thing to keep in mind with manual processing is that orders are put on hold until you login and mark them as paid. If you are selling electronic downloads, your customers will not have access to their download until you log in to your control panel and process the order.

Receiving Payments from Your E-Store

Processing customer payments over the internet is an essential part of your e-store. We have integrated support for many of the leading payment processors.

Your customers will be able to choose from a variety of payment options. These options include credit cards, Paypal, purchase order, telephone, fax, email and check by mail. Within your control panel, you can quickly set up your own payment settings and start collecting right away.

Accepting Credit Cards

In general, there are two components required for you to receive payments from your customers in real-time over the internet:

1.) Merchant Account

A financial institution or bank account that is used by a merchant specifically for the purpose of collecting proceeds consumer bank account or credit card payment transactions. Your existing bank may be able to set you up with a merchant account, in which case, all you'll need is a payment gateway. If your bank can set you up with a merchant account, they will know how to work with Authorize.net.

2.) Payment Gateway

This service acts as the online facilitator of the transaction. It makes sure the funds are available, authorizes the charges and informs the credit card companies of the transactions. We have integrated our e-stores with the leading gateway, Authorize.net.
